Google Ads and Local Services Ads for HVAC Companies
Paid search managed for heating and cooling contractors, built around cost per booked job instead of cost per click.
Part of HVAC Marketing
Why is your HVAC ad spend going up while your bookings stay flat?
HVAC is one of the most expensive categories in Google Ads. Clicks in a competitive New England market routinely run past thirty dollars, and a single wasted click costs more than a lot of businesses pay for an entire lead. That leaves almost no room for a sloppy account.
Most of the accounts we take over are leaking in the same few places. Broad match keywords pulling in searches for parts, DIY fixes, and job seekers. Ads running at two in the morning to a phone nobody answers. Every click landing on a homepage instead of a page about the specific problem the person searched. Bidding on "HVAC" as a single word, which is roughly like advertising to everyone who has ever heard of heating.
There is also a second option most contractors underuse. Local Services Ads sit above the regular ad block and above the map, they carry the Google Guaranteed badge, and they charge per lead rather than per click. For emergency work they are frequently the cheapest real lead on the page.
Paid search is one track in our HVAC marketing program, run the same way as our paid advertising management for other trades. Ads land on service pages from the HVAC website work, every call routes through the lead follow-up system, and HVAC SEO lowers what you spend over time. Local Services Ads also pull your Google rating, so review management matters here too.
What is quietly wasting your HVAC ad budget?
Four things we find in nearly every account we audit. Each one is measurable, and each one is fixable in a week.
Broad match with no negative keyword list
You bid on furnace repair and pay for people searching furnace repair manual, furnace repair cost calculator, and furnace repair jobs hiring. A serious negative list is the single fastest way to cut waste, and most accounts we inherit barely have one.
Ads running when nobody can answer
Emergency searches spike at night and on weekends. That traffic is worth paying for only if a person or an answering system picks up. Paying for a 1am click that goes to voicemail is money set on fire.
Everything landing on the homepage
Someone searches for a heat pump installation quote and arrives at a general homepage listing eight services. They have to hunt for what they came for, and most of them just leave. Each campaign needs a page built for it.
No idea which clicks became jobs
Without call tracking and conversion setup, the platform reports clicks and you report guesses. You cannot cut the wasteful half of the budget if you cannot tell which half it is.
How do you structure HVAC paid search?
Two systems doing two different jobs, with the budget shifting between them based on the season and what the numbers say.
1
Local Services Ads first
Above the map, badge attached, charged per lead. We handle the license and insurance verification, the service and area settings, and the lead disputes when a call is clearly not a real job.
2
Google Ads for the considered work
Replacements, heat pump conversions, and system upgrades involve research before anyone calls. Search campaigns and landing pages built for those longer decisions, where Local Services Ads are a weaker fit.
3
Landing pages that match the search
One page per campaign, answering the question that was typed, with the phone number visible without scrolling and a form short enough to finish on a phone.
4
Tracking down to the booked job
Call tracking, form tracking, and conversion values so reporting shows cost per booked job rather than cost per click.

What does ongoing ad management include?
Ad spend is paid straight to Google and stays separate from management. You keep the account either way.
Campaign build or rebuild
Keyword research, campaign structure, ad groups organized by service and intent, and ad copy written for each one.
Local Services Ads setup and management
Verification, service and area configuration, budget pacing, review syncing, and lead disputes filed when a charged lead was not real.
Negative keyword work
Search term reports reviewed regularly and the junk cut. This never finishes, because new wasteful searches appear every month.
Landing pages per campaign
Dedicated pages for the services you are bidding on, built to load fast on a phone and get to the call quickly.
Bid and budget adjustments
Shifting spend toward the services and hours that convert, and pulling back where cost per job is out of line.
Seasonal budget shifts
Weight toward cooling before summer, heating before the cold, and maintenance plans in the shoulder seasons when demand for both is soft.
Call tracking and recording
So you can hear whether the lead was qualified and whether your team booked it. Most cost per lead problems turn out to be booking problems.
Reporting
Spend, leads, cost per lead, and cost per booked job where the data supports it. Plain numbers, not a dashboard screenshot.
Why have us run your HVAC ads?
A short list of the things that tend to matter to owners who have been burned before.
1
You own the ad account
It is created under your name and stays yours. Some agencies run client spend through their own account, which means leaving costs you all of your history. Not here.
2
Spend is separate from our fee
Your budget goes to Google directly. We are not marking it up, and we have no reason to push you to spend more than the work justifies.
3
We answer the phone problem too
Cost per lead is only half the equation. If calls are going unanswered at five on a Friday, more budget makes it worse. We look at what happens after the click.
4
Ads connected to the organic plan
Paid search covers the immediate need while search rankings build. The point is for the ad budget to come down over time, not climb forever.
Month to month · You own the account
Let's look at your current cost per lead and where it should be.

Common questions about HVAC Google Ads
If yours isn't here, ask on the strategy call.
What should an HVAC company spend on Google Ads? +
It depends far more on your market than on your revenue. A dense metro with several well funded competitors takes a meaningfully larger budget to stay visible than a smaller service area does.
The useful way to size it is backwards from the work. Decide how many additional installs or service calls you want per month, apply a realistic booking rate on leads, and work back to a lead target. Then compare that target against what leads currently cost in your area. If the math does not clear your margin, the answer is a tighter campaign rather than a bigger budget.
We build that model with you before spending anything, using your actual close rate and average ticket.
Are Local Services Ads better than Google Ads for HVAC? +
For emergency and repair work, usually yes. They appear above everything else, they carry the Google Guaranteed badge, and you are charged per lead rather than per click. A wasted click costs you either way, but with Local Services Ads it does not.
They are weaker for planned work. Someone comparing heat pump options over three weeks is not going to make a decision from that ad format. Replacements, conversions, and larger system upgrades do better with search ads pointed at a page that answers their questions.
Running both and shifting budget between them by season is what we do for most heating and cooling clients.
Can I dispute Local Services Ads leads I was charged for? +
Yes, and you should. Google allows disputes for leads that were outside your service area, for a service you do not offer, spam, or a duplicate of a lead you were already charged for.
The catch is the window is limited and the disputes have to be filed consistently to be worth anything. Most contractors mean to do it and never get around to it. We file them as part of the management work, which for some accounts recovers a real slice of monthly spend.
How fast do Google Ads produce calls for an HVAC company? +
Calls usually start within a few days of launch. Reliable performance takes longer, generally four to six weeks, because the campaign needs enough conversion data before the bidding settles down.
Plan on the first month costing more per lead than the months that follow. That early spend is buying the search term data that tells us what to cut. Judging an account on its first three weeks is the most common way contractors kill a campaign that was about to work.
Do you require a long term contract for ad management? +
No. Month to month, same as everything else we do. The account is in your name, so if you leave you keep the campaigns, the history, and the conversion data.
We ask for a fair look at it, usually around ninety days, because pulling the plug at week three throws away the learning period you just paid for. That is a recommendation, not a commitment you sign.
